In The Descent of Man Darwin addresses many of the issues raised by his notorious Origin of Species: through the traits and instincts of animals, the author of the work in question tries to prove that there is no fundamental difference between people and animals. Most importantly, he explains the ‘races’ of men that Victorians used to talk about according to the sexual selection. This book is a comprehensive account of Darwin’s thinking on sexual selection and his suggestion that many of the features of humans and animals are due to the struggle for reproductive partners. This was a rather polemical work. However, Darwin strived to be not recognized as an extreme revolutionary. He is steeped in Victorian sensibilities regarding gender and cultural differences: He views people as advancing from a state of barbarism to the present-day gentlemen and ladies and women as being less rational and more emotional than men and thus biologically suited to remain in the home. Social Darwinism was based, in large part, on The Descent of Man.
